Home remedies for menstrual cramps

During your menstruation, the muscles of your uterus contract and relax to help shed the built-up lining; this can sometimes cause cramp pains. Many times these pains are minor and can be treated at home, but there may be some situations where they are severe and can indicate something more serious, so it’s important to always consult your doctor.

Here are some home remedies that can help relieve menstrual cramps:

Apply heat to your abdomen

Placing a hot water bottle or heating pad against the abdomen can relax the muscles and relieve cramps. The heat helps the uterine muscle and those around it relax, which may ease cramping and discomfort.

Drink plenty of water

According to experts, you’re more likely to have abdominal cramps during your period if you’re dehydrated. Aim to drink eight-ounce glasses of water per day. It’s important to replace lost fluids by drinking plenty of water.

Massage your tummy with essential oils

Research suggests that some essential oils can help ease period cramps when massaged onto the abdomen. Oils seem to be most effective at reducing period cramps, due to their ability to boost circulation include Lavender, sage, rose, marjoram, cinnamon, and clove. Massaging in a circular motion for just five minutes a day before and during your period may help lessen cramps and boost circulation in your abdomen. 

Get some exercise 

Strenuous exercise might not be beneficial if a person is in pain, but gentle stretching, going for a walk, or doing yoga may help. Exercise also releases endorphins, which are nature’s natural pain relievers.

Avoiding certain foods

During menstruation, it’s also a good idea to avoid certain foods that can cause bloating and water retention. Some types of foods to stay away from when you have cramps include salty foods, caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, and carbonated beverages. Reducing or cutting out these foods can help alleviate cramps and decrease tension. 

Eat anti-inflammatory foods

Some foods can offer natural relief for cramps and they taste great. Anti-inflammatory foods can help promote blood flow and relax your uterus. Try eating berries, tomatoes, pineapples, and spices like turmeric, ginger, or garlic. Leafy green vegetables, almonds, walnuts, and fatty fish, like salmon, can also help reduce inflammation.
